What Does The Bible Say About Drug Addiction? It Is Powerful

This post is for you if you have a loved one struggling with drug addiction or if you are struggling with drug addiction. What does the Bible say about drug addiction and hope?

Drug addiction tears through the lives of families today. It has no socioeconomic boundaries, and it does not matter where you live or where you come from. Drug addiction is real, and it feels like a nightmare.

You slowly begin to notice that your son, daughter, or loved one is becoming more isolated, late, or doesn't show up; they always have an excuse, hang out with different people, and no longer take care of themselves.

Or maybe you are reading this and searching because this could be you struggling with drug abuse. You find yourself searching for hope. You're addicted. It may have started as recreational drug use, and now it's something you're a slave to. You look in the mirror and no longer recognize yourself.

If this speaks to you, you are in the right place.

I invite you to spend a few minutes today as I share our story and what the Bible says about drug addiction.

I am writing this because I once was in your shoes and searching for hope, anything to help me understand addiction better. It was not me who was struggling, but two of our sons. If you are struggling with addiction yourself, please stick with me; you will find hope in this.

Because of drugs, one of our adult boys landed in prison multiple times, and each time he got out, he relapsed into the same lifestyle as before. The other son never went to prison, but was spiraling down so fast and was almost unrecognizable from the man he once was. These drugs included methamphetamine, fentanyl, prescription drugs, and heroin. And yes, more than once, we received a call that an ambulance was on the way to the hospital from a near overdose.

It is by the grace of God and a strong foundation in Christ that my husband and I were able to make it, and both our boys are now living clean, productive lives.

What my husband and I learned from all of this is that you need to educate yourself and have a plan for when your loved one is ready for help. There are so many addiction recovery programs, support groups, and addiction treatment centers that are valuable in recovery.

What was a blessing to our boys and us was the Oxford house. They are nationwide. That has been one of the important pieces of this recovery process for us. Your recovery journey may look different, but educate yourself on what works best for your situation. Education is something no one can take away, and you will be thankful for it.

The bigger lesson is that our God is greater than any addiction. God is faithful.

If you are struggling or your loved one is, there is hope, and Hope has a name, and it is Jesus. True freedom is found in Christ. Please understand this freedom is not found in good works or religious ceremonies, but found in a ‘personal relationship' with Jesus Christ.

Jesus didn't come for the healthy and the righteous. He came for the sick and the sinners. If you're battling addiction, you're exactly the kind of person He spent His ministry reaching.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV), “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

So, what does the Bible say about drug addiction?

What Does The Bible Say About Drug Addiction

The Holy Bible provides a framework or guide for life.

The Word of God does not use the term “drug addiction” as we know it today, but it speaks powerfully to bondage, substance abuse, idolatry, self-control, and freedom. It offers hope in Jesus for recovery and life. A hope that is eternal, faithful, that will not leave you or forsake you.

Bondage is spiritual warfare.

The devil is ruling this earth and is on the prowl. He is looking to kill, steal, and destroy. This is spiritual warfare. Satan will use anything to make things feel impossible and difficult to escape from. He wants your loved one to feel isolated, addicted, enslaved, in bondage, and he wants you to feel like it is impossible.

Breaking the chains of addiction is NOT impossible. My husband and I have witnessed it with both of our sons. For some insight, your rock bottom is not their rock bottom. When you think it can't get any worse, it might, but as my husband used to say, as long as there is a heartbeat, there is HOPE. Prayer is power. So keep praying.

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV),  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

John 10:10 (NIV), The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV), “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

If you are blaming yourself, please stop; this will not help, but what will help is recognizing that this is not just a physical addiction, but a spiritual battle. Understanding this will set you free.

It is valuable to learn how to battle with spiritual weapons, including prayer, Scripture, and the power of the Holy Spirit at work in areas you cannot reach. God is bigger than any addiction. Trust Him. Pray, have faith, and don't stop praying.

Addiction is a form of idolatry.

Drug users believe they will find escape, pleasure, numbness, relief, or whatever they are searching for when they use drugs. Satan is the father of lies, and all they end up getting is slavery to the substance. The Lord does not want anything to control you. God's word tells us there should be nothing more important than Him. Anything that takes His place becomes an Idol.

Exodus 20:3-5 (NIV), “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

Addiction, no matter if it is drugs, money, gambling, food, alcohol addiction, or whatever takes the place of the Lord, is a form of idolatry and creates a cycle. There is a temporary relief of pain, stress, or emptiness. Your brain associates the addiction with relief. Then you begin to organize your life around the relief found. At this point, relationships and responsibilities are no longer a priority.

The drug or whatever the vice is in your life becomes the thing you run to. You become dependent on it rather than on the Lord. Unfortunately, with drugs, it also leads to not just a mental dependency, but a physical dependency, making it even more difficult to escape.

Matthew 19:26 (NIV), Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

What does the Bible say about drug addiction

But do not forget or lose sight of the fact that with God, all things are possible. Again, I encourage you to keep praying, keep believing, and keep the faith.

Self-control is a protection.

Ephesians 5:18 (NLT), Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 20:1 (ESV), Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

Satan wants you or your loved one not to be of sober mind, so He can destroy families, lives, and not allow you to live the abundant life the Lord has designed for you. Self-control is pure protection for you.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NIV), Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

2 Peter 1:5-6 (NLT), In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness…

Drug addiction affects the body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

You were bought at a price. Jesus shed His blood on the cross for YOU. Your body is a temple where the Holy Spirit lives when you invite Him to be your Lord and Savior.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV), Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Romans 12:1 (NIV), Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

If you are struggling with addiction, there is a way out. Ask for help and go to Jesus just as you are.

In addition to going to Jesus, you can call a free 24/7 National Drug hotline if you are in the United States. The Lord is with you, and there are people to help you. Your body belongs to God, not substances.

What Does The Bible Say About Drug Addiction

Galatians 6:2 (NIV), Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

When you see your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and not yours to destroy, treat it with the purpose and care it deserves. It is honoring God when you stay clean. When you begin to understand that you have a purpose in the Kingdom of God and that Jesus loves you completely, your emptiness can shift beyond yourself toward worship and be filled with the Holy Spirit. There is only one thing that can fill the void and emptiness you are searching for, and it is Jesus.

Freedom comes from truth.

John 8:32 (NIV), Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:36 (NIV), So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Replace the lies with truth. God's truth. Who you are in Christ.

It is okay that life is messy. There is grace; you are redeemed and forgiven. You are loved. You are worthy.

Romans 5:8 (NIV), “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Jesus is there waiting for you to call on His name. Go to Him today.

Philippians 4:13 (NIV), “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

What Does The Bible Say About Drug Addiction

The road might feel long and all uphill, but there is hope. You or your loved one is not too far gone to get clean and stay clean. With Christ, all things are possible!

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV), “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

Jesus loves you, and you do not need the drug of choice to cope with life. Jesus is the father of compassion and the God of all comfort.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV), “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Your past, or your loved one's struggles, do not define who they are or their future.

There is a new life in Christ.

If you have a loved one who is struggling, stop making excuses for them. We understand how hard it is to accept the fact that your loved one is battling addiction, but that is reality. Begin the education process, and plan for when the time comes to begin the recovery process; you will be ready.

Romans 12:2 (NIV), “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Renewal of your mind shifts your identity.

Addiction builds on lies, so begin today and speak truth.

There is power in the Holy Spirit.

The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. Wow! Soak in that for a minute.

You only have so much power, but with the Holy Spirit, anything is possible, and chains of addiction can break.

Romans 8:11 (NIV), “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

Acts 1:8 (NIV), “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…”

John 15:5 (NIV), “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

What does the Bible Say about Drug Addiction

It is Biblical to create a community and accountability.

You or your loved one can never recover in isolation. God designed freedom to happen in community.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV), “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Isolation is addiction's best friend. Shame tells you to hide. Pride tells you to handle it on your own. Fear tells you that people will judge you. The enemy knows that if he can keep you isolated, he can keep you enslaved.

James 5:16 (NIV), “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Notice that confession comes before healing, which happens in community, not in private. You need others praying for you and accountability in the recovery process.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV), “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Proverbs 27:17 (NIV), “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Romans 15:30 (NIV), “I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.”

Galatians 6:2 (NIV), “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Romans 12:15 (NIV), “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”

God created you for community, and recovery is possible when you have support in place.

So, how can you apply what the Bible says about drug addiction?

Philippians 2:13 (NIV), “or it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

You begin each day in prayer, asking the Lord to guide you, and if you're struggling, ask Him for the strength to stay clean. You need to be in constant prayer, asking for help, not just as you begin the day, but throughout the day.

If you have a loved one who is struggling with addiction, again, wake up with prayer. Ask the Lord to watch over ____ and lay your burden at the cross. Give it to the Lord; you were not designed to carry this alone. It is important to take care of yourself. When you are overwhelmed with the worry of addiction, it will take its toll on your body physically and mentally. Begin each day with prayer and continually give it to the Lord throughout the day as it creeps into your mind. Ask for wisdom and direction. Ask the Lord for protection over _____ and to put people in his/her path to point them to Jesus.

This can apply to both of you, whether you are struggling with addiction or loving someone who is an addict. Ask the Holy Spirit to make you aware of what your triggers are that make you want to use your drug of choice, or what makes you upset about the situation. As you learn what your triggers or temptations are, you can create a new, healthy environment. Find a community that will walk with you each day to help you succeed.

When you are tempted, and your urge becomes strong, go to the Lord in prayer and ask for help. Have a structure of supports in place to help guide you along with the Lord.

The Lord is in the business of supernatural transformation, and no program can offer that.

John 14:16-17 (NIV), “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever- the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

You or your loved one's struggle is not defined by addiction.

Remember who you are in Christ. You are an overcomer, redeemed, and forgiven. You are loved.

Faith provides hope when willpower runs out. It connects you to a power greater than yourself.

When you can't see a way forward, faith reminds you there is One who can.

Drug addiction is not the end of the story.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV), “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

What Does The Bible Say About Drug Addiction

This promise is for YOU. Hope is anchored in the character of God. Look up and rest in Him. Trust Him and have faith.

Romans 5:3-5 (NIV), “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

If it is your loved one who is struggling. Hold on to the hope and keep praying because prayer is powerful.

Drug addiction is not the end of the story; it might just be the beginning of your testimony.

It is important to keep in mind that the recovery journey isn't perfect. Life is not perfect, and faith does not eliminate the struggle, but it provides you with the strength to endure it.

You or your loved one may need medical treatment to detox safely. Counseling for mental health care. A biblical counselor for spiritual guidance. A support group for a sense of community, if possible, including family members.

BUT there is HOPE with God, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

God's power is real. Recovery is possible. And the God who breaks chains is waiting to break yours.

The good news is He loves you just as you are and is waiting for you to go to Him.

If you have never had a relationship with Jesus Christ, you can invite Him into your heart today.

Lord, please forgive me of my sins. I know I am a sinner, and I come to you as I am. I want to put my trust in You alone.  I believe you came to earth and lived a blameless life, were crucified on the cross, and shed your blood for me and my sins. After three days, you rose from the grave and conquered death. You ascended to heaven, where you are preparing a place for me to have eternal life. I believe You will come again. I want to live my life for you and put my trust in you alone. Thank you for loving me. In Jesus name, Amen.
