It is easy for all of us to focus on the problem of the day or season, and miss the many blessings all around us. 

Counting your blessings does not depend on where you live, your economic status, your race, or your barriers; it is a mindset that will change your life. 

It is something that must be intentional and disciplined. When you intentionally shift your focus to counting your blessings, it will become a natural way of life, and you will see change.

You may be sitting at home scrolling through social media and comparing your life to everyone else's. Only seeing the highlight reel, not the work they did to achieve that success, or, in many cases, it is not their ‘real life' at all.  

Or you might feel like your life is falling apart, and everything around you is uncertain, and your head is just above water. If this is you, I get it. 

At this point, you find yourself missing what God has already given you. Your brain begins to see only your problems, not all the blessings around you. 

All our situations are different. 

My life was turned upside down. The man I loved for twenty years decided he wanted a different lifestyle, and we had three kids. We did not have much money, we did not have family in town, I was a stay-at-home mom, and I was about to be in very unfamiliar territory. 

I existed at times, did my best that I could for my kids, and sobbed to the Lord over and over. I wondered where God was. 

I kept crying out to the Lord and searching for Him, trying to make sense of it all. 

Because I went through such hard times, I learned about God's goodness. I experienced the love of God that no man could give me. It was then that I understood what a ‘personal relationship' with the Creator meant and all of HIs tender mercies.  I realized God's hand was in it all, and the Lord was with me all along. 

I learned that when I shifted my focus away from the situation and changed my perspective on the blessings around me, I found a better life. 

One thing I did that made me realize I had nothing to complain about was volunteering at a homeless shelter. I quickly realized I had so many blessings and so much to be thankful for. 

I had to learn to be more intentional about what I did have, my blessings, and not what was missing. 

Please understand that if you are going through difficult times, counting your blessings does not diminish what you are going through, but gratitude allows you to shift your focus to the positive things. 

I encourage you not to ignore your pain, but to go to the Lord in prayer about what you are going through, talk with Him, lay it at the cross, and ask God for help and direction.  You were not made to carry the burdens of this world. 

The reason for this website and for sharing my faith is all that the Lord did for me and how He changed my life. 

I want that for you.

I encourage you to begin your day in the presence of the Lord. When you begin your day, you are already blessed with the joy of the Lord and God's love, and you invite the Holy Spirit to guide you throughout the day.

1. Lamentations 3:22-23 

Lamentations 3:22-23 (NLT), “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”

Soak in that verse for a while. 

Every morning, the day is new; your circumstances may not have changed, but what has is a day to start over with the Lord. It is to wake up, right out of the gate, and have the knowledge of God that He is with you. To understand that the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, is powerful. God's goodness. WOW!

With the start of each day, you have God's grace, His forgiveness, His mercy, and you have God's presence! A daily provision!

With God, you do not get the leftovers! Each morning His mercies are new. Great is His faithfulness! 

2. Psalm 103:1-2

Psalm 103:1-2 (NLT), “Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. 

The Psalm of David has a theme of counting blessings. 

David reminds us never to forget the good things the Lord does.  

Our brain is wired to forget the good and focus on the bad. How many times do you forget all the good things in a day, but focus on the one negative thing that was said or happened? 

Journaling and writing all your blessings down will help train your mind to remember and see the good. Another helpful activity is to have a blessing jar. Write down blessings on a piece of paper each day, and when you are feeling down, reach into the jar to be reminded of that time or blessing. 

You don't have to wait to feel blessed by the big things in life. I mentioned that it was the little things that I became aware of that changed my perspective. The Lord blesses us consistently, even in the smallest details, throughout each day. It is our job not to miss those blessings. 

How many times does Scripture tell us to remember or never forget? It is because Satan is ruling this earth, and the enemy wants us to be deceived. 

God is faithful. God is good.

3. Matthew 6:26

Matthew 6:26 (NIV), “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

This is one of my favorite verses. If the Lord cares for a little bird, how much more does He care for you! 

When you put your complete trust in the Lord, He will provide. This does not mean you do nothing and are lazy. Look at the birds, they still wake up, have to go hunt for food, and the same is expected of you. You can not just sit back and do nothing and expect results. When you put your faith and trust in God, He will orchestrate things in your life. Do not miss those blessings the Lord has for you each day. 

Begin today to start counting your blessings for being able to read (you are reading this), for food, for shelter, the basics of life. Do not overlook the simple things in life that are provided for you.  

4. Psalm 23:1-6

Psalm 23:1-6 (ESV), “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Counting your blessings is pretty easy when things are good and you are on top of the mountain. 

It is when you are in the valley, going through the hard things in life, that it can be difficult to count your blessings.

5. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

1Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV), “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

This is when you have to be more intentional, count your blessings, and not just focus on your circumstances. The verse continues to say this is the will of God. 

What I learned during my hardest season was that it is not God who wants us to experience hurt. Satan is the ruler of this world. But the Lord is right there with you when you are walking through it. If we had a perfect world with no hurting, we would be in heaven. 

When you have Christ in your heart, He is always working. There are times you may not feel him or have to search, but keep searching with your whole heart, and you will find Him. 

6. Job 1:21-22

Job was a man of integrity who feared God and was blameless. He was a man of God. It begins with a conversation between Satan and the Lord. 

The book of Job is found in the Old Testament. I encourage you to get into God's word today and read about Job. 

Job was blessed, and then Job lost everything. This is how Job responds. 

Job 1:21 (NLT), He said, “I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The LORD gave me what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD!”

Not only does Job thank the Lord for what he had, but he continues to praise the Lord, and he does not blame God. 

Job 1:22 (NLT), In all of this, Job did not sin by blaming God.

Job understood the character of God and who He is.

The acknowledgment of God is not anchored in what good gift he has, but in who He is.

Job continues to praise the name of the Lord. 

It is during these hard times that you will see spiritual growth and your life will be transformed. 

When you look back on these hard times, it might be part of your story.

7. Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28 (NIV), “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

When I was going through a rough time, my girlfriend would keep telling me that the Lord would use this and good would come out of it. 

This is where faith comes in. You have to trust the Lord and stand on His promises no matter what. 

The Lord is always working for you behind the scenes when you do not understand. Make sure to count your blessings in the middle of a storm and to give thanks for the presence of the Lord. 

Trust Him and have faith!

Being able to count your blessings and be content no matter your circumstances is a learned skill that can be life-changing. 

This was something I had to be intentional about, and I remember talking about it with a friend when I was 40. It was learning to be in the moment and be content with what I had in front of me. This was a turning point for me in my life. I was 40, a single mom of three, and struggling in every area of my life. To stop, count my blessings, and be present, not thinking about the next, was life-changing for me. 

If you find yourself discontent, I challenge you to stop, be present, and count your blessings, no matter your circumstances. 

8. Philippians 4:11-13

Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV), “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

9. Hebrews 13:5 

Hebrews 13:5 (NIV), Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

The more you learn to be content with the present and what you have, and rest in the promises of the Lord, that is when your life will change. He will never leave or forsake you! WOW!

10. Ephesians 1:3

Ephesians 1:3 (NIV), “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”

You are already blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.  

11. Psalm 103:3-5

Psalm 103:3-5 (NLT), He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

You may not be able to hold, touch, or physically see spiritual blessings, but as soon as you invite Jesus into your heart, you are blessed. 

You are forgiven, chosen, redeemed, saved, at peace, have grace, and you are a child of God, loved by the Creator, and have an eternal inheritance! 

Spiritual blessings are a gift. It is not from the good work you have done in this life, nor is it something you can earn. It was bought by the blood of Jesus on the cross for you. 

The Lord is always working for you when He is your Lord and Savior.

Dear Lord, I come to you today with a thankful heart. I chose right now to lay my burdens down to you (tell God what is on your heart), and I lay them at the cross. Lord, help me to see each and every blessing you have for me today. I do not want to miss a single blessing. I pray for the peace of God to pour over me. Thank you for loving me. In Jesus name, Amen.
