crushing fear

John 16:33 (NIV), “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Your heart races, your stomach feels sick, your hands begin to sweat, your legs feel weak, and your mind begins to go places you do not want to be. Your mind is consumed by unwanted thoughts of all that could happen. You start to freeze, feel paralyzed. You can't move. You want to move, but you are unable.

There are many common fears: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of public speaking, fear of not having enough money, fear of being single, fear of flying, fear of heights, fear of the future, fear of death, and the list goes on.

In today's world, fear seems to be everywhere. Fear is a natural human emotion, or it would not be talked about so much. But if you allow it, fear can control every area of your life.

Although I do not know your specific fear, there is good news: you can overcome it, which can profoundly impact your life. (However, if you are in danger, unsafe, in an abusive situation, or feel threatened, and looking for answers, you must immediately stop and call for help. You are loved. You are valued. Don't believe the lies. Please get help. This blog is not for you.)

Before we discuss how to overcome fear, ultimately crushing fear-let's define fear.

According to the Cambridge dictionary, the definition of fear, when used as a noun, is a strong, unpleasant emotion or thought when you are frightened or worried by something dangerous, painful, or bad that is happening or might happen. When used as a verb, the definition of fear is to be frightened of someone or something unpleasant; to be worried or upset.

As defined in psychology, fear produces a biochemical and emotional response that can either protect us or be problematic. The article “The Psychology of Fear,” updated in April 2024, provides a much more in-depth psychological perspective on the definition and types of fear.

Do you often find your mind playing and replaying your fear with the worst-case scenario of what could happen? This can happen with a common fear, a deep-seated fear, or your biggest fear. My friend, it is time to not let another day go by and stop fear from controlling you. Today, take your first step in crushing your fear.

Here are 11 tips to help you overcome fear with the ultimate tip crushing fear.

crushing fear

Today is your day to learn some tips and start to crush your fear. Live the life God created you to have. You were born for such a time as this.

1. Break down your fear into steps.

Begin with what triggers the fear. Start with that. Identify, if possible, at what point the fear begins. The important thing is to keep moving forward and, with each step, celebrate. You can do this one step at a time. You may have a particular fear that directly results from an experience. That may be something that you need to take some time to work through and process.

2. Face your fear head-on.

Do not ignore it. Validate it and conquer it. Again, one step at a time. This does not mean you should freeze and not move forward. Continually work towards a positive outcome, making small strides to conquer it. Be sure to celebrate even the little things, because they add up to the big things. The more you face your fear, the more familiar it will become to you. And the more comfortable it will be for you to overcome it.

3. Do your research.

crushing fear

Look at the statistics of your fear. What does research say about an adverse outcome regarding your fear? After you research your fear, put it into perspective and repeatedly rehearse the reality of your fear in your mind. Tell yourself, “I can do this because research shows_________.”

4. Mentally walk yourself through your fear.

Do some visual exercises with a positive outcome. Mentally visualize your fear. Break your fear down into steps and visually walk towards it. Face the fear, and move through the fear with a positive outcome on the other side of the fear. The more you do this mental exercise, the more comfortable you will become.

5. Have a plan.

When you begin to feel fear, have a plan. Pre-decide what you are going to do. Take some deep breaths. Begin with some self-positive talk. Rehearse the research you did on the fear in your mind. If music speaks to you, play music that gives you peace to help calm you. Have a go-to song that you have pre-decided on when you begin to feel fear. We always have K-Love radio playing in our home 24/7, it is positive and encouraging. There are many good songs, but one that might be helpful to you is “Fear is a Liar” by Zach Williams.

6. Self-talk.

Who do you listen to more than anyone else? The person in the mirror. Words are powerful. It is vital to have positive self-talk to overcome your fear. Be sure to let yourself know that you can overcome your fear. You can do this. Be positive and make a list of all the positive things that will result directly from crushing your fear.

7. Get professional help.

This can be talking with a counselor or even a pastor. Therapy and speaking with a professional to better understand your fears or any difficult life situation are always helpful and positive. They lead to personal growth and help you become more self-aware of your emotions. I am forever grateful to my pastor for all of his guidance and for him continually pointing me to Jesus. To my counselor years ago for helping me understand my struggles and gain clarity over them.

8. Be kind to yourself.

Give yourself grace. You can work through this one step at a time and be an overcomer! It is okay to take it slow and for it to be a process. Just keep moving forward towards a positive outcome.

9. Share with family members or a close friend.

Having some positive support is helpful. A family member or a close friend can walk you through your fear or talk with you about it. If you have a positive support system to help you overcome your fear, then share and communicate your fear and allow them to help you navigate through it for a successful outcome.

10. Journal your fear.

Put your fear down on paper. If it is something that happens regularly that you struggle with, then look at the events prior to the fear. By journaling your fear, you will allow yourself to look it over and study it, gaining a deeper understanding while not experiencing the feelings of fear. You can watch for common denominators. What are you doing before you begin to have feelings of fear?  Are you watching the news, a scary movie, or scrolling on social media? What we input into our minds determines our mindset and shapes our perspective.

The ultimate tip of crushing fear is with faith in Christ.

“Faith crushes fear by keeping your eyes on the hope and love of Jesus. Faith crushes fear by believing hope is eternal and love never fails.”

11. Root yourself in Faith.

crushing fear

Root yourself in Faith. This is the ultimate way to crush your fear. The Bible talks about fear repeatedly. When the Bible tells something repeatedly, it is God with a loudspeaker; we need to listen. It also tells us that we are not in this alone. The Lord knows that fear is real. He knows your struggles.

It is essential to understand that fear is not from God. But the Lord gives us power, love, and a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT), “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

The spirit of fear is used to keep you from living your best life and what you were called to do. It is Satan working and scheming to keep you paralyzed or living in fear. Satan is the father of lies and a thief to steal your joy away.

John 10:10 (NKJV), “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

It is our job to believe and put our complete trust in the One who created us, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He has already fought the battle for us and is victorious. He has done all the work ahead of us. All He asks from us is to have faith and believe.

God has a perfect love for you.

If you have fear in your life, don't forget how deeply you are loved. God is love.

1 John 4:18 (NIV), “There is no fear in love. Because perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears has not been made perfect in love.”

If you are blessed with having children, you know how much and how pure your love is for them. You always want to protect them and keep them safe. As a parent, you instruct your children what to do depending on the situation to keep them safe. God does the same for you and me. He knows this is a broken world, and we will battle daily. God loves you.

God did not leave us to figure fear out ourselves. He left His word, the Holy Bible and a helper, the Holy Spirit. Which means He left us a guide.

What does God say about fear in the Bible and crushing fear?

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV), “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God doesn't leave us to fight our battle of fear alone.

He shows us how to fight it, and He is so good to us that he even gives us directions. Before He can help you, you must believe and put your complete trust in Him. This is not negotiable. You must stand on God's truth, the word of God, the Holy Bible. He wants a personal relationship with you. He wants you to talk to Him.

Think about it this way. If you need help with a task at work and have no idea how to do it. You may need to seek direction and guidance from a manager or someone with authority.

The same goes for God. When you experience fear, ask the Lord for help and talk to Him. The Lord knows you better and loves you more than anyone. This is simply praying. It is not magic words. There is no specific formula.

God wants and made us to have a relationship with Him. This means communication. Simply talking to God. He wants us to speak to Him and seek Him with our whole heart. To pursue holiness, and when you do, you will find Him.

Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV), “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Remember that the spirit of fear does not come from the Lord. It is from the enemy. So if fear is a spirit and it does not come from the Lord then it is a spiritual battle.

The Lord teaches us how to fight fear.

crushing fear

In Ephesians, Paul tells us that we will have spiritual battles. He instructs us to arm ourselves with all the resources that God has provided. And to put on the full armor of God.

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV), “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil and the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all of this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”

Don't waste the protection God has given you. God is a God of choices and the choice is yours. He has already made a way for you. When you put your trust in the Lord there is power.

There is power when you keep your eyes on Jesus.

crushing fear

Here are a few verses to keep tucked away. Put them on your mirror, in your car, in your house, where you will be reminded of them daily. Speak truth over yourself and claim the victory God has already made a way for you and fought for you.

Psalms 56:3 (NIV), “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

Psalms 23:4 (NIV), “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Luke 1:37 (ESV), “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Hebrews 13:5 (NKIV), “For he himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:9 (NIV), “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Philippians 4:13 (NIV), “I can do all things through him who gives me strength.”

You may ask yourself, Why me? Why would I struggle with this fear? When you conquer your fear, you might look back with a more grateful heart.

When we experience hard things in life, that is often what draws us closer to God. These are the times we get pressed down and transformed into who we are to become.

There is hope to overcome your fear. Hope has a name and its' name is Jesus!

Romans 5:3-5 (ESV), “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Do not let another single day pass. Believe. Trust. You can overcome and crush your fear!

Exodus 14:14 (NIV), “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Keep looking up with eyes on Jesus and on things above. When you have a heavenly perspective, your life will change.

Philippians 3:20 (NIV), “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Trust the Lord. Value yourself. Move forward. Crush that fear. Live your best life.

What tip will you try today to overcome your fear and crush it?

God's love for us is so deep and perfect that when He saw how broken the world became, He came to earth in human form to make a way for us.
