Bible Verses About Being A Light In A Dark World
This post is all about how to shine Jesus' love with Bible verses about being a light as a guide, plus simple steps to keep your light burning in your everyday life.
Have you ever experienced a difficult time, and then someone walks into the room and it changes everything? You can feel the love and encouragement, and the situation suddenly doesn't feel as heavy.
Some might think it is a personality trait, but what if it is the presence of God working through you? Just like the sun is the reflection and source of light on the clouds, Jesus is the source of light on and through you.

My friend was over visiting, and she said something that stuck with me. We were talking about Jesus, and she said, ‘Did you know that light travels faster than sound?' She went on to say the importance of being an example to others and letting Christ shine through you. People should be able to tell that you are a Christian before you even speak.
A trusted source with the answers to life's questions.
The Lord left us a handbook for life, the Holy Bible.
Let's look to see what God's word says about being the light in the very places that feel like the darkest moments.
Ephesians 1:18-21 (NIV), I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
As you read these Bible verses, I pray that the Holy Spirit will speak to your heart.
Let's look at Bible verses about being a light.
Matthew 5:14-16
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV), “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

YOU ARE the light of the world… This is a declaration. It is part of your identity. Let that sink in, and put it on the same list as YOU ARE loved. Chosen. YOU ARE forgiven, and the list goes on… YOU have a purpose, and that purpose is to be a light for Jesus.
John 8:12
John 8:12 (NIV), When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus is the source of light, like the sun is the source of light on the moon. You are not the source. You are a reflection of His light.
John 1:4-5
John 1:4-5 (NIV), In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Darkness will not win.
Psalm 119:105
Psalm 119:105 (NIV), Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Thank you, Lord, for giving me just enough light for my next step. Thank you for guiding me and always being with me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Isaiah 60:1
Isaiah 60:1 (NIV), “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.
You might be struggling or in a dark place, but this tells you and me to get up and get your eyes on Jesus. How can you be a testimony for the Lord if you do not arise, get up, and shine? The Lord is right there with you. He will not leave you. So if you are not wanting to move forward and arise…then remember Matthew 19:26 “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” You can do it!
Ephesians 5:8-10
Ephesians 5:8-10 (NIV), For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.
Ephesians 5:11-14
Ephesians 5:11-14 (NIV), Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Proverbs 4:18
Proverbs 4:18 (NIV), The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.

1 Peter 2:9
1 Peter 2:9 (NIV), But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Do not forget your identity. It is about a community. Being a light for others, for Jesus, and sharing your testimony. Your story might just be what someone needs to hear.
Romans 13:12
Romans 13:12 (NIV), The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
Philippians 2:14-16
Philippians 2:14-16 (NIV), Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
Grumbling or arguing is not helpful, but living for Jesus and having your actions outshine the darkness will make a difference. Stand out in the room for Jesus.
Isaiah 58:8-10
Isaiah 58:8-10 (NIV), Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
This is not only about serving others, but it is also about what happens to you in the process. This reminds me of when I was walking through one of my darkest times, and I was a single mom struggling. I used to volunteer at a homeless shelter. I was not only able to help the people we served, but it was by serving that my heart changed.
James 1:17
James 1:17 (NIV), Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Feelings change, but the Lord is a solid rock. He never changes. Stand on the solid rock of Jesus today.
Isaiah 60:19
Isaiah 60:19 (NIV), The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
2 Corinthians 4:6
2 Corinthians 4:6 (NIV), For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:5
1 Thessalonians 5:5 (NIV), You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
Matthew 6:22-23
Matthew 6:22-23 (NIV), “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
John 3:20
John 3:20 (NIV), Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.
Proverbs 13:9
Proverbs 13:9 (ESV), The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
John 1:9
John 1:9 (NIV), The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

Simple steps to keep your light burning.
In the Christian life, you are not made to know the entire plan. You are called to trust and to have faith. The more you trust in Jesus, the more your faith will grow and the stronger your light will be, for your next step or an organic light that burns through you.
1. Get in God's Word daily.
If you miss one day, try not to miss two days, and if it has been a while, start today!
2. Pray.
Talk to the Lord. Be raw and honest. He wants your heart. It is all about a personal relationship. Don't forget to listen. The Holy Spirit will guide you.
3. Find community.
Your light, your testimony, how Jesus carried you through your darkest place may just be what someone else needs to hear to help and encourage them. It is not just your personal testimony. It shows that light wins. You were not meant to keep your light hidden.
The goal is to stay so close to Jesus that it overflows with His joy and love through you. Your light might be just what someone needs for their breakthrough.
It is not about you. It is about the source of the light, Jesus. Let His light shine through you today when you walk in the room, in your conversations, and in your actions. Lead with God's love.
Let your light shine for Jesus and make a difference in someone's life today!
I would love to hear what the Holy Spirit spoke to you as you read these verses. Please share in the comment section below.
A prayer for you.
Lord God, thank you for being Lord of my life and for loving me. Thank you for guiding me, being my light, and showing me each step. I invite you and want you to be with me as I go about my day. I pray, Lord, that as I walk into a room, I enter it with love and respond in love. When people see my actions, they see You in me, and You get all the glory. Help me when I fall short. Holy Spirit, speak to me. I want to be close to You and keep my eyes only on You. Your word says that my identity is to be your reflection and have your light shine through me. Help me to be an example for you, and your will be my way of life. I want to honor you in all I do. In Jesus' name, Amen.

If you have not invited Jesus to be Lord of your life and would like to invite Him into your heart today, a Salvation prayer for you.
This prayer is the most important decision of your life. It will transform you from the inside out and not just impact this life, but change your eternity!
Pray from your heart and make it your own.
Lord Jesus Christ, I come to you as I am, and I want you to be my Lord and Savior. I believe you died on the cross for my sins and shed your blood for me. Please, Lord, forgive me of my sins. I want to live my life for you, and I want to be a reflection of You. I believe you were crucified, rose from the grave, ascended to heaven, and left the Holy Spirit to live with me. Thank you for preparing a place for me to have eternal life. Help me trust you when I fall short. Lord, help guide my steps in my new life with You. Thank you for loving me and forgiving me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
If you just prayed and invited Jesus to live in your heart, welcome to the family!

Music is powerful.
Music can speak to you in many ways. It can take you back to a specific time in your life, encourage you, stir up feelings, and is a way of worship. We listen to K-Love radio in our home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It continually points us back to Jesus. It is encouraging and has been life-changing for my family and me. I encourage you to turn it on and see how it will change your day. From a young age, if you grew up in the Christian faith, you may remember singing, This Little Light of Mine, a classic kids' song, but a good reminder to be a light for Jesus.
Here are a few more songs.
